The Interzoo trade show has recognised sustainability in pet food production with its inaugural Sustainability Award.
Presented on the eve of this year’s exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, this week, the top award went to Swiss-based form DSM-Firmenich, which is developing functional ingredients for pet food and animal health using an algae-based omega-3 oil as an alternative to marine raw materials. Also nominated for the award was Thai producer I-Tail Corporation (ITC) for sustainable marine fishing initiatives and agribusiness specialist ADM.
The winner of the first prize was decided by a vote of the attendees at the first Interzoo Sustainability Conference and a panel of judges, and the award was presented by Elliott Harris, former United Nations chief economist and Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development.
The event also featured the Interzoo Pioneer Award, presented to Cologne-based company Redoggo, which manufactures dog toys from upcycled materials sourced from the automotive industry, such as airbags and seatbelts, and the Interzoo Long Distance Award, which honoured the exhibitor who had travelled the furthest to Nuremberg. This went to Zealandia Ltd from New Zealand.
