Independent retailer Direct Pets has been named Pet Shop of the Year for the North East at the 2026 My Local Awards.
The business, which operates stores in Berwick on Tweed and Team Valley, Gateshead, was chosen by a public vote having built a strong local reputation by focusing on expert advice, genuine customer relationships and supporting local pet owners.
The business was started in 2012 as a small pop-up shop for an online pet supplies operation.
Founder Tom Woodcock said: “We are incredibly proud to receive this award because it was decided by our customers.
“From day one, our goal was simple – to create a place where people enjoy visiting, receive honest advice and leave happier than when they arrived.”
The Berwick store will be staging a Dog Show and Fun Day on Sunday July 26.
