Mars has created a cross-industry partnership with fellow food company PepsiCo in a new project to advance regenerative farming practices across its European pet food supply chain.
The project will equip 24 farmers in Poland with training, expert guidance, tools and incentives to adopt climate-smart practices that boost soil health and agricultural resilience. The partnership will advance the production of 3,359 hectares of regenerative wheat used in pet care brands such as Whiskas and Pedigree, while also enabling PepsiCo to incorporate sustainably grown rapeseed oil into Lay’s and Doritos snacks.
With the support of implementation partner ADM, farmers will receive hands-on training and guidance from technical specialists on topics such as soil health, water management, and long-term agricultural resilience through regenerative practices such as crop rotation. To accelerate this program and support carbon sequestration efforts, farmers will receive financial incentives based on the dedicated practices they implement.
Paul Gardner, lead global commercial VP at Mars Incorporated, said: “Through this pre-competitive collaboration, Mars, PepsiCo and ADM are working together to help tackle the climate impacts of the agricultural supply chain.
“Working across shared crop rotations in this way, we can empower farmers to adopt more climate-smart practices over the long term and across multiple crop types and harvests that can help enhance soil health, reduce emissions and build farm resilience. This partnership model marks an important step toward a more sustainable food industry.”
