The Bank of England has launched a public consultation about which wildlife images should feature on the next generation of UK banknotes.
An earlier consultation found that wildlife images are the favoured option for the next note issue, and now members of the public are being invited to nominate their favourite animals from a list drawn up by the Bank officials and wildlife experts to be used as the central image on each of the four denominations (£5, £10, £20 and £50).
A list of 18 mammals, birds, amphibians, insects and fish has been devised, including animals such as hedgehog, fox, barn owl, salmon and dragonfly.
The Bank has stated that the four denominations will need to represent different environments from across the UK rather than necessarily depicting the four animals that receive the highest number of responses, and that it will be a multi-year process to design, test and print the notes.
The next series will still include a portrait of the monarch, and representation of the Home Nations will also be an important feature in the design, the Bank added.
The consultation will close on July 3, 2026.
