Fresh pet food supplier Years has recalled all of its fresh meals (excluding the Chef’s Collection range) over fears that contaminated buckwheat may be causing eye irritation in dogs.
As of 9pm yesterday (August 18), 192 customers have reported potential, although as yet unverified, eye issues to the company, with symptoms including excessive blinking or squinting; continuous pawing at the eyes; thick discharge; and general discomfort around the eyes.
An initial review by Years has identified buckwheat as a potential contributing factor, and the company is investigating possible contamination within its buckwheat supply chain. All confirmed cases have emerged after buckwheat was introduced into the recipe, with zero confirmed cases prior to that change, the company reports. Laboratory testing is underway, with data covering symptoms, diet and environmental factors across confirmed cases checked by an independent ophthalmologist.
The company has initiated a full, voluntary product recall of the affected products and is urging subscribers to stop feeding the meals immediately, whether their dogs is manifesting symptoms or not, and to contact a local vet if any issues emerge. Subscriptions will be paused for a period of six weeks, and Years has pledged to arrange free collection of any unused meals and to apply a full credit to account holders.
A company statement said: “Years has chosen to voluntarily recall the meals as a precautionary measure, without causation having yet been proven.”
