Pet database company Identibase has created an awareness day for lost cats, to fill a perceived gap in the annual schedule.
The company has nominated September 15 as Lost Cat Awareness Day, designed to bring awareness of lost cats and suggest effective measures for owners to follow to keep their cats safe through mechanisms such as microchipping and maintaining an up-to-date database. Cats are 11 times more likely to go missing than dogs but, although there is a Lost Dog Awareness Day (April 23) until now there has not been an equivalent focus for lost cats.
Identibase recorded 20,000 pets reported as missing during 2024, but, as these pets were microchipped and registered, reunification with owners was possible for the vast majority. However, despite it now being a legal requirement to microchip cats, nearly two thirds of stray cats arriving at Woodgreen Pets Charity still not microchipped, says the rescue centre.
