With the deadline for tough new rules on packaging materials fast approaching, European firm Coveris was giving visitors to the Interzoo exhibition a glimpse into the future of packaging.
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) comes into force in August this year and states that food-contact packaging cannot contain PFAS (so-called “forever chemicals”) above a miniscule threshold. In addition, by 2030, all packaging in the EU must be recyclable, and compliance with these regulations have been a key focus of activity for Coveris.
PFAS-free solutions devised by the company include a new design for standing bags featuring a tapered base instead of the additional strip of material used to create a flat bottom in the standard bags currently on the market. This allows less packaging material to be used to present the same volume of product on shelf.
Also on display at the show was the MonoFlexBE Metallised pack, a fully recyclable PE monomaterial solution incorporating a metallised inner layer to protect the product contents, and the MonoFlexE Lite, which allows for high-quality printing while remaining compliant with the new regulations.
