Interest in terriers on the rise, says new report

Terriers and traditional working dog breeds have overtaken crossbreeds as the UK’s most sought-after puppies, according to a new report.

Pet rehoming platform Pets4Homes has released its latest Pet Industry Report, compiled using data from the millions of pets advertised through the service during the past year. The study reveals that Jack Russell and Border terrier puppies are finding buyers in just 11 days on average, ahead of Yorkshire terriers, Border Collies and mixed breeds at 14-15 days.

Prices have hit record highs, says the report, with the Jack Russell, the UK’s fastest selling dog, seeing a 15% average price increase from £561 to £648 during the past year. The average puppy sold for £1,093 in June 2026, up 26 % year-on-year, and the typical puppy is now finding a buyer in 18 days, down from 22 days last year.

The study also reveals that Britains are turning away from flat-faced dogs. French Bulldogs, which until recently were the most commonly bred puppies in the UK are now only the fifth most popular, having lost top spot to miniature Dachshunds.

Kitten listings on the platform grew 20% year-on-year and have now overtaken pre-pandemic levels, while dog breeding remains around 30% below that level. Poultry has proven to be an unexpected success on the platform, with listings up 57% year-on-year and as many birds sold in the first half of 2026 as in the whole of 2024.
