The Queen delighted the organisers of National Pet Month when she announced her support via the Royal Family feeds on Instagram and Twitter.

The news was especially welcome since so many plans for the event had changed due to coronavirus restrictions.

Her Majesty revealed that she celebrated National Pet Month and advised on the Royal Family Instagram feed: “Today we are marking National Pet Month. The nation’s pets have kept us company during lockdown and have joined our daily walks.” The post was accompanied by a series of beautiful photos of the Royal Family and their pets.

The first Royal Corgis – Dookie and Jane – joined the Royal Family in 1933, when King George VI gave them to his daughters, Princess Elizabeth (now The Queen) and Princess Margaret.

On her 18th birthday, Princess Elizabeth was given her own Corgi named Susan and has owned more than 30 corgis and dorgis since.

Her Majesty’s love of horses has remained with her throughout her life. From spending time with her pony, Peggy, at the age of six, today, Her Majesty still rides horses and takes a great interest in the horses she breeds and owns for racing.

Michael Bellingham, National Pet Month chairman, advised: “We were delighted to hear that Her Majesty is celebrating National Pet Month. We are not surprised; her love of animals is well known. The unconditional love our pets give us is an incredible boost in such challenging times.”

He continued: “For this year’s National Pet Month, which runs until 10 May 2020, we have called on the on UK’s pet lovers to stay home, stay safe and to get online for the nation’s pets. Visit www.nationalpetmonth.co.uk to find out how you can get involved.”

National Pet Month is asking anyone staging a digital fundraiser for a UK pet charity or rescue to tell them about it via social media. Search National Pet Month on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn.
