Retailer Pets at Home is celebrating senior pets by sending a special birthday card to dogs and cats who reach the equivalent of 100 years old.
More than 100 ‘golden oldie’ pets have been identified from the retailer’s database of 8.2 million Pets Club members to receive a birthday surprise including a card signed by a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mascot. And a selection of app rewards, such as free beds, treats and YuMove joint supplements.
The initiative follows research from Pets at Home, which revealed widespread confusion over when pets become ‘senior’. Two fifths (43%) of dog owners don’t realise a dog’s age varies by breed and size, while half (49%) still believe dog years are simply multiplied by seven. A third of pet owners (34%) think the same applies to cats.
To help owners find out their pet’s “real” age, Pets at Home has created an online calculator for dogs and cats, which takes into account the size of the dog. The calculator shows that the ‘100 year’ milestone equates to around 19 years for a medium dog, or 13 for a very large breed.
