Three-quarters of UK dog owners buy treats

British owners spend an average of 10% of their salary spoiling their dog, according to a new survey from SmartBones.

The poll reveals that treats are the most popular way of showing how much we love our pets, followed by giving extra cuddles and kisses, going on their favourite walk and playing ball games.

Despite one third (33%) of owners giving into puppy dog eyes and sharing human titbits from our plate, over three-quarters (78%) will buy dedicated treats and chews for our canine companions with one in 10 (12%) spending up to £20 per week. In addition, almost half (46%) of owners look to treat their pooch every day.

TASTE

Personalisation of treats falls low on the priority list at only 3% as owners focus on taste, health benefits, enjoyment and how long their pet will be satisfied.

Gemma Serdet, brand manager at SmartBones, said: “It’s no surprise that we love to spoil our dogs but what is great is that owners are buying treats that are developed with their pet’s wellbeing in mind. When considering what to buy pets, try opting for something that will encourage chewing as this will help to keep them happy and healthy by cleaning their teeth and promoting a strong jaw, as well as preventing boredom.”

SmartBones offer an alternative to rawhide and come in a range of flavours, featuring a layer of chicken breast. They are low in fat and made from vegetables including corn, sweet potatoes, peas and carrots and are available in a range of sizes and flavours with RRPs starting from £2.99.
