Vets can help prevent child abuse

Vets and pediatricians in the US are being told to be aware that mistreatment of pets could be a sign that children and others in the home are also at risk of violence.

Both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics are encouraging medical professionals to be alert.

Some US states already mandate cross-reporting of child and animal abuse, enabling information sharing among child and animal welfare agencies that could facilitate intervention before a situation worsens, the Deseret News reports in Salt Lake City.
