A citizens science project is collecting data on the number of terrapins and turtles found released into the wild in the UK.

Called ‘Turtle Tally’, the survey was launched in 2018 by a team at Hadlow College who are interested in the effects of such releases on the local environment and the welfare of the animals.

The aim is to provide a survey that is easily accessible by members of the public who can upload information and photos – however they are warned not to touch or capture the turtles.

The researchers said: “This is purely an observational study so we are using the data to map out locations and linking with other groups and organisations, working on research that may help conserve native fauna and flora and the terrapins themselves.”
