A pet food and treats manufacturer has released a video that it hopes will help dog owners identify the differences between allergies and intolerances that result in skin conditions.

The symptoms of the two can be very similar but there are key differences, said nutritionist David Southey BSc, who tackles the subject in a new video for Fish4Dogs.

He said: “An allergy is the immune system reacting to what it sees as a foreign or unusual protein whereas an intolerance is often a secondary reaction that can be triggered by a variety of factors including the diet.”

There are three main causes of food-related intolerance in dogs, which can be related: nutrient imbalances, ingredient sensitivities and hyper-sensitivity.
To avoid nutrient imbalances, pet owners should look for foods with high levels of high-quality proteins and omega-3 fatty acids, he says.

With ingredient sensitivities, David suggests a similar approach with elimination diets to identify the causes while hyper-sensitivity conditions need the correct balance of fatty acids.
