A pet shop has lost its licence following public concerns for the health and wellbeing of animals housed on the premises.

Dave’s Aquarium, in Bolton, which claims on its website to be the UK’s largest pet and aquatic superstore, was raided by the RSPCA and trading standards.

According to the Manchester Evening News, RSPCA officers were seen loading crates of animals into the back of several vans outside the pet shop.

A spokesperson for Bolton Council said: “Trading standards officers and the RSPCA visited Dave’s Aquarium on Fold Road, Bolton in response to public concerns for the health and wellbeing of the animals.

“During the inspection, RSPCA officers removed several animals, including reptiles, rabbits, mice and birds due to concerns.

“Health and safety issues at the premises were also raised and as a result, trading standards has declined to renew the business licence.”

A petition was posted online by one worried member of the public, Clare Howarth, who called on the shop to be boycotted and closed down. It attracted more than 1,300 signatures.
