Luxury dog bedding business Charley Chau has been named NatWest Great British Entrepreneur of the Year 2018 for the North after winning its own shortlisted category of Family Business Entrepreneur of the Year.

Christine and Jenny Chau, the two sisters behind Charley Chau, beat off tough competition with both their wins at the awards presentation at Manchester United’s Old Trafford. As overall winners of the evening, Charley Chau will head to London in January for the national final.

Christine said: “We’re just two self-confessed crazy dog ladies doing something we love. To be recognised by the Natwest Great British Entrepreneur Awards in this way is an incredible honour. The shortlisted finalists for the North are a powerhouse of inspiration, amazingly talented entrepreneurs, and we feel extremely lucky to have been named Entrepreneurs of the Year 2018 among such stellar company.

“For a pet lifestyle brand to be recognised in the awards just shows how much our industry has grown since we launched in 2010. To go from making a dog bed on the sitting room floor to having happy customers in over 45 countries around the world and now this wonderful award – what an incredible moment for Charley Chau.”

Founded in 2010, after the sisters searched for ‘comfortable, stylish’ dog beds for their own Italian greyhounds, the Manchester-based company says it has attracted legions of Charley Chau devotees around the world.

Francesca James, co-founder of the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards, said: “As a dog lover myself, I can fully appreciate both the inspiration and practicality behind Charley Chau.

“But what is really special about Christine and Jenny is that they’ve taken the close bond they share as sisters and applied it to running a business and haven’t been content with keeping their little hobby business. They’ve shown the drive and determination to take a great idea and really make something of it. They’re fully deserving of both awards.”

Serial entrepreneur and GBEA Ambassador Helene Panzarino, who judged the application, said: “A passion combined with fantastic business skills and a personal and professional awareness illustrated by Christine and Jenny mean this business is going from strength to strength. Their focus and enthusiasm literally jumped off the page.”

The NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards celebrates entrepreneurship across a number of categories at five gala finals across the UK in Cardiff, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester and London.
