Two racoon dogs have been rescued in the same village – just hours apart!

The dogs were reported to the RSPCA after being spotted in Burneside, near Kendal, Cumbria. The first was seen in the morning while the second was reported that evening, less than half a mile away.

The first raccoon dog was found collapsed and breathing heavily, hiding under a van, while the second was found behind a bike in the garden of a house. Both the male and female raccoon dogs have been taken to a boarding centre nearby for temporary holding. If the owner does not come forward then the animal welfare charity will look for a suitable home.

Raccoon dogs – also known as tanukis – are members of the canid family and are native to East Asia. They are wild animals but there is a growing trade in keeping them as pets in the UK.
