Blackpool’s famous beach donkeys will soon be enjoying a rest after a busy summer season – but all should be well as they had their annual MoT before the holidays to ensure they were fit and healthy.

Vets from Gillivervet, in Anderton, Chorley, carried out health checks on 40 donkeys, which are as much part of the seaside holiday as ice-cream and candy floss.

As well as checking their feet, teeth and general well-being, the donkeys were wormed and vaccinated and their backs checked to make sure their tack isn’t rubbing or causing discomfort. The veterinary checks were carried out in association with the local authority in the Lancashire resort, which provides licences for the donkeys operating on the beach.

Vet John Gilliver said: “The health and welfare of the donkeys are a key priority and we ensure that they are fit, healthy and happy before they begin the summer season. They are wonderful animals and I have a huge admiration for donkeys so as a practice, we were happy to assist Blackpool Council.”
