A rescue dog has been bringing some joy to hospital patients and has been captured on film for a new Channel 5 series of The Dog Rescuers.

Four-year-old springer-spaniel- cross-poodle Rolo was one of 30 dogs rescued by the RSPCA. More than four years later, Rolo has come on in leaps and bounds and has spent the last three years with Pets As Therapy.

In the TV series, Rolo brings a smile to the face of a recovering hospital patient, which brought tears to presenter Angellica Bell’s face. The presenter joined the therapy dog for his weekly rounds at Southend University Hospital, in Essex, with his owner, Claire Dean, to find out the impact he has on patients’ recovery.

As well as his work at the hospital, Rolo has also taken part in the Read2Dogs scheme at a local primary school and visits residents at a nearby care home.
