A man was found to have a live 10cm tapeworm lodged in his brain.

The worm was discovered and removed by doctors after the 26-year-old Chinese man suddenly developed epilepsy.

Dr Wang Chunliang, who carried out the procedure in South-east China, said: “The worm was still alive when we took it out. It was springy, white all over, and could swim.”

The parasite is thought to have ended up in the man’s brain because he had eaten undercooked or contaminated food. The patient, known as Liu, is said to love grilled food and had been in good health until he experienced a number of epileptic fits, the Mirror reported.

A worm or egg, which is not killed by cooking, can travel through the blood, reaching the brain or other organs.
