Burglars wearing Freddy Krueger-style Halloween horror masks used a sledgehammer and pickaxe to break into a pet store, causing thousands of pounds of damage.

The two men broke in through the roof of the family business, Aquatic and Pet Warehouse, in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, using the pickaxe and a pair of tin cutters, the Derbyshire Live reports.

They stole more than £700 cash and caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the roof and phone lines, which they apparently destroyed thinking it was the alarm system, during the burglary in the early hours of the morning.

Owner Simon Smith said: “It’s sickening to the point of making you wonder if it’s all worth it any more.”

CCTV footage showed that the police, along with Simon and the store’s security guard, missed the burglars by seconds when they arrived after being alerted by the alarms.

The burglars escaped across the roof, taking their ladder with them but leaving the pickaxe, sledgehammer and tin cutters behind.

He told Derbyshire Live: “It’s scary because of the amount of force they’ve used – it just beggars belief. You can’t help but imagine what might have happened if we’d caught them. It could’ve been a very different story.”

The burglars broke open a small safe and stole £580 before breaking open the till to steal the cash float of around £150. On their way out, with alarms going, they stopped to rip open a pallet of Coca-Cola and helped themselves to a can each.

Damage to the roof and the phone lines is estimated to cost more than £3,000 to repair.
