Burns Pet Nutrition founder and vet John Burns has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Swansea Bay Business Awards on Friday, February 23.

Speaking on his win, John said: “I was surprised and thrilled to receive the award and I am very grateful to the Swansea Bay Business Club.

“Twenty-five years ago I set out to promote pet health and well-being through high-quality nutrition. I think I have achieved that goal and at the same time, I and all my colleagues at Burns have built a successful business based on ethical principles.

“I’m particularly proud that everyone associated with Burns – pets, pet owners, suppliers, employees and the locality of West Wales – have gained from our efforts.”

John launched Burns Pet Nutrition back in 1993 while working as a vet in practice, at a time when healthy pet food was unheard of. Believing diet to be the primary cause of many pet ailments including itchy skin, moulting and digestive problems, John recommended that his clients feed natural, healthy pet food based on protein, brown rice and vegetables. Unable to find any such food on the market, John decided to launched his own.

Burns was the first UK pet food company to bring chemical-free pet food to market and today is one of the UK’s most successful pet-food companies specialising in award-winning food for cats, dogs and rabbits.

In addition to being a market-leading pet food company, Burns is proud to be a Living Wage employer and even has its own in-house charity, The Burns Pet Nutrition Foundation, which is staffed by a team of six.

In addition to winning the Lifetime Achievement award, John and the team also took home Manufacturer of the Year award for its wet food range, Penlan Farm, which is made and produced at the Burns factory in Burry Port.
