Aquatic plants don’t always grow as they are supposed to, says JBL, due to the presence of bacteria that can denature minerals and nutrients around the roots.

It has launched JBL ProScape PlantStart, which aims to assist vigorous plant growth and keep the substrate free from cyanobacteria and fungal infestation.

A spokesman said: “Certain bacterial mixed cultures can generate iron II accessible to plants out of worthless iron III.

“A targeted colonisation of the aquarium substrate with these bacterial cultures can mean the plant’s root area is protected against the intrusion of phytopathogenic fungi, while blue-algae growth is hampered by the biofilm.”
