Scientists have found a way to extend the lifespan of the turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), which hit old age after just a couple of months.

The German research team started by wiping out the middle-aged fish’s resident gut bacteria with antibiotics. They then fed the older fish (9.5 weeks old) with the gut contents of younger fish (6 weeks old), reports The Scientist.

The fish treated with younger gut contents experienced a median increase in life span of 41%.
