Driver ploughs car into pet business

A man has admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a crash in which a car ploughed into a grooming salon.

The owners of Purr-fect Pets Dog Grooming in Hull thought the building would ‘explode’ after a black Ford Focus nearly came in through the door after a crash on August 30 last year.

The driver had to be cut from the wreckage by firefighters following a collision with a silver Vauxhall Astra driven by Jae McManus at the junction with Woodcock Street in west Hull. The Ford driver was taken to hospital while McManus allegedly ran off.

Speaking at the time, co-owner Trish Shakespeare said: “We was just sat here trimming dogs and the next thing we knew it was such a bang.

“We thought it was an explosion. We jumped and we phoned the emergency services straight away. We just said: ‘Send the police, ambulance and fire brigade straight away’.”

McManus, of Tickton Grove, north Hull, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving when he appeared at Hull Crown Court.

Dale Brook, for McManus, said: “He’s pleaded guilty. He knows it was a serious offence which may result in his incarceration.

“It dates back to August 2018. In the interim he’s served a prison sentence for another criminal offence and has been released on a tag in April.

“He’s been engaging with ReNew drug services, employment agencies, trying to find employment, so he appears to have turned a corner. I would ask for a pre-sentence report so the true position can be looked into.”

Judge Simon Jack granted the application for an adjournment, with McManus due to be sentenced on August 5. He advised McManus to co-operate with the probation service in the preparation of the report.

The salon’s other co-owner Kerry Drewery said: “The door’s OK, the door is open, but all the floor has all ripped up and the reception door has got a hole in the other side so we will have to get a new one.

“We couldn’t get out when it happened. There was a window cleaner stood where the car hit literally a few minutes before as well.”
