A bearded seal, normally found in Arctic waters, has been spotted on the south coast of the Republic of Ireland.

Birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast Paul Connaughton spotted the visitor in west County Cork. He believes it is only the second recorded sighting of a bearded seal in Ireland.

Paul sent photos to the Irish Whales and Dolphin Group and the Irish Seal Sanctuary to get confirmation of the breed. Their sightings officer, Padraig Whooley, told BBC News NI that when animals were swept or blown significantly off course they often struggled to cope with an unfamiliar habitat, though this specimen appeared to be in rude health.
