One of the oldest pet stores in the country is on the market.

Bloodworths hardware and pet store, in Bath Road, Cheltenham is currently on the market for £85,000 as owner Michael Crawford plans to retire.

According to a report on, the shop has been a firm fixture in the town centre for 175 years and celebrated the anniversary with a party last October.

In the advert for the store on property website Daltons Business, the unit includes a 1,458 square foot ‘spacious ground floor sales shop’ complete with shelving, display stands, counter and electronic cash register. There is also a basement and first floor comprising a ‘front area showroom’, kitchen and toilet. It is described as an ‘excellent main road trading position.’

The family-run shop has been at the heart of Cheltenham's shopping district since 1842 and began as Bloodworths Pet Store, in Albion Street, gloucestershirelive reports. According to the website, it is the oldest pet store in the country.

The shop attracted worldwide media attention in the 30s when two circus elephants parading in the town tried to steal from the store.

The Crawford family bought Bloodworths in 1998 and merged it with Newmans Hardware Store in Bath Road. Newmans, originally founded in 1909, was taken over by the Crawford family in 1980.

The family has extensively refurbished the store and it is now four times its original size.

Michael Crawford, aged 65, took over the store from his father and currently runs it with his brother.
