Aquarium seeks new abode

The future of a £20,000 aquarium tank – complete with aquatic inhabitants – looks a little uncertain as its owners try to find it a new home.

Trustees at Buchanhaven Harbour in Peterhead, Scotland, announced the closure of the little aquarium earlier this year, due to costs and a lack of volunteers to run it.

However, locals set up a ‘Save Our Aquarium’ campaign, including a petition attracting more than 400 signatures.

Now the trustees have offered to donate the tank to campaigners if they can come up with an alternative venue. Currently the tank is in a boatshed that has been earmarked as a community space and educational facility.

In a statement on the Buchanhaven Harbour Facebook page, the trustees said: “The Board of Trustees has offered to donate the fish tank to the Save Our Aquarium campaign. The 10ft x 4ft x 3ft tank, which cost £20K, will need to be rehoused in a building suitable for an aquarium.

“The team behind the campaign, Mr Joseph Yule and Mr Roy Ritchie, have the energy, passion, enthusiasm, volunteers and support which is needed to make the aquarium a success. We wish them well and will support them in any way we can.”
