More social workers are entering the veterinary field in the US, offering individual counselling and group support not only to pet owners dealing with their pets’ disease and death, but also to the vets who provide medical care.

One in six vets struggle with thoughts of suicide, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, and the suicide rate among vets is four times that of the general public, according to data.

“You empathise so much with patients that you take on the burden and it takes a toll on you,” AVMA spokesman Michael San Filippo told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
