It's difficult to know what to do for the best; a balance between keeping the shop open to serve the public and hopefully having a business to come back to, or keeping us safe from this virus? We initially settled on being open from 9am to 2pm and wearing disposable gloves, facemasks or face shields, and using copious amounts of hand sanitiser.
On week five we had a re-evaluation. We were not seeing any customers before 10.30am, which is in line with what happens when the schools are off, but there are definitely people on the streets after 2pm, while Saturdays have become a complete disaster. A few years ago Saturday takings were roughly double weekday takings but recently, with both chemists shutting at 1pm, it was tailing off a bit.
At the moment the butchers, post office and bakers are shutting at 1pm on Saturdays so for the next month or so that’s the way to go. Coupled with the total collapse of the tourist trade, quite obviously, Saturdays are looking to be our quietest day of the week. So moving forward from the May Bank Holiday we are trying 9am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. I am pretty convinced we’re wasting our time, customer-wise, before 10am and after 3pm – but we will see. Strangely, I had a conversation with our local baker who is experiencing a similar trading pattern, steady all week, with a bit of an upturn on Mondays and Fridays, but Saturdays are quickly becoming the quietest day of the week. Is this a sign of the future? Goodness knows!
