Early on in lockdown we opened 9am to 2pm but a few weeks ago we extended it to 3.30pm. As time has gone on there have been more people on the streets after 2pm but the streets are virtually deserted by 3pm. Currently two of the town’s three chip shops have reopened and as soon as the other one opens up I'm sure there will be more people about. The ‘non-essential’ shops are beginning to open so we should soon be back to nearly normal opening hours. That is apart from Saturdays. For a few years Saturdays have been quieter trade days, relying more on visitors than locals, so much so that both of the chemists close at 1pm on Saturdays. During the pandemic the post office, bakers and butchers have also closed at 1pm and, with a lack of visitors, it looks like Saturdays will become our half-day for some time to come, if not permanently. But then what we have lost in Saturday trade we have made up during the week. We do live in very strange times.
