A few months ago we started selling wild bird seed in plastic milk jugs, the four pint size, the idea being that this was a way of recycling single-use plastic jugs. Customers brought them in empty and purchased one full of wild bird seed.
Initially it was well received and quite a few people bought one. However very few brought them back for a refill, they just came in and bought another. Not quite what we had in mind as a recycling project.
The other thing is one or two customers are now commenting that the seeds in the milk jugs are of a higher quality and more palatable to the wild birds than our standard wild bird seed. If they only knew they are identical.
