All a-flutter over Twitter!
Detail:
More than 10 billion messages have been sent through Twitter since the microblogging site launched in 2006. So extraordinary is its rate of growth that it is estimated if Twitter continues as it is, the 20-billionth tweet will be sent, get this, in five months!

Ten billion more tweets by July. That’s a number I can’t even begin to comprehend. However, apparently this equates to 600 tweets each and every second. Twitter has also revealed that apparently one in five of those tweets now include a reference to a product.

Are your ears twigging yet? Do you feel the urge to toot a tweet? Surely this presents incredible marketing potential and customer service channel. Whether you’re a retailer, manufacturer or distributor, here is a real opportunity to talk direct to your customer, advising them, for instance, of new launches and special offers.

It’s also an opportunity for you to deal directly with customers’ queries and handle complaints. A perfect way, in short, to forge vital customer relationships and build loyalty. And all in 140 characters. Perfect for today’s time-strapped consumer.

Yet despite Twitter’s meteoric rise, a survey by Virgin Media Business revealed that only 16 of the UK’s biggest 100 listed companies were using Twitter to engage customers.

I wonder how many in the pet industry use Twitter to promote their business or products? If you are averse to using Twitter on the assumption that the average Tweeter is a teenager or in the their early Twenties, on-line research has found the middle-aged, those aged 45 to 54 years, are 36 per cent more likely to visit the site. Web monitoring company comScore in fact came to the conclusion that the 25 to 54 year olds were the ones driving the Twitter trend.

So, is Twitter your friend and are you actively thinking of ways to embrace this new communications trend – or have you not even heard of it?
