A manufacturer’s plan to give ‘spot-checked and cleared’ recalled dog food to animal shelters has been stopped in the US.

The FDA said Evanger's Dog & Cat Food Co. plan was unacceptable because pentobarbital contamination was not uniformly detected in the affected products.

Five dogs in one home were sickened after eating Evanger's Hunk of Beef au Jus canned dog food in January, and one of the animals died. Testing later found the barbiturate in that and other dog foods made by the company, the Sacramento Bee reported.
