A 90-year-old retailer has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award – and still works 40 hours a week at Pet Food Supplies, in Macclesfield, Cheshire!

Irene Astbury  was nominated for Cheshire’s Woman of the Year award, but scooped the Lifetime Achievement Award instead at a lunch and ceremony at Eaton Hall, Chester.

Irene opened the pet store 35 years ago with her late husband, Les, who had worked as a pet food sales rep.

When Les died in 2007, Irene asked her grandchildren, Gayle and Stuart Parks, to take over the reins of the shop – but she continues to work Monday to Friday, 9-5pm.

Over the years, she has served generations of the same family and says she cannot see herself ever stopping work. And, as her gran lived to 102, she says she’s got ‘a few years left’ in her yet!

She said: “Every day interests me. I enjoy coming in because I meet different people and I like meeting customers.”
